Real Estate & the Olympics

How are the Olympics like real estate? Sounds like a long stretch

Let me tell you a story.

Olympics 2026

The Winter Olympics in Italy, Australia has starred which seems ridiculous to many northern hemisphere countries who see Australia as a beach country rather than a snow country.

Watching the athletes and admittedly having a vested interest in the journey of Scotty James. Scott was at Tintern Grammar with my daughter and is a frequent visitor back to the school to voluntarily speak with the students. A Gold medal human, his successes are many, however there have been many times in his career that he hasn’t won.

Going for Gold, for the win.

You go to the Olympics to get the gold medal.

You go to an Auction to get the house.

Olympics Vs Buying a Home

Olympians train for years, invest money in coaching, and travel. Competing is not free, getting to competitions is not free, particularly if you are a winter olympian and need to travel overseas for most training and competition.

As a home buyer, you work for years to save your deposit. You know that the deposit is going to take effort, and sacrifice, and it’s only 10% of the overall cost. You are self taught, relying on search engines, friends, relatives, and the person behind you in the supermarket queue.

Finally, the Olympic trials are on. This is where your early hours, training, dedication, and investment in your sport is tested. You don’t make it through, it’s another 4 years till the next Olympics. More dedication, more money, some wins, some losses. If life is kind you will get to try out again.

As a home buyer, you go to the Open for Inspections, you go to the Auctions, you put your ‘best foot forward’ in a competitive, sealed envelope offer situation. You pay for the inspections, you research, search, rinse and repeat. More weekends, more money, more frustration. You think there are no wins, just losses.

The Olympics roll around again. You are older, wiser, more experienced, more practiced, more determined. You have upped your training, acquired a new mind coach, as well as your original coach. Olympic trials again. You make it through selection. You are going to the Olympics.

The build up, the excitement, the Australian uniform, the confidence. You did this. You are going to compete against the best in the world. It’s your time to shine.

As a home buyer, another home is on your wish list. You are determined, more experienced, more practiced at bidding, at making offers, you want this home. You get the building and pest inspections done before hand, you add more money to your budget, you lower your expectations a smidge. You bid. You come second.

Olympics, Getting Silver, Being the Underbidder on a home

You come second and win a silver medal in the olympics.

You come second when buying a home, and there is no silver medal, just disappointment, heartache, and frustration and still no home. Fortunately, there is no four year wait.

Coming second when buying a home seems to have no bright side. What are you missing?

Olympic Success & a Coach, Sold Sticker on the For Sale Board & a Coach

Professional athletes spend years honing their skills. They employ a team to get them further. Sports psychologists, getting the mind as good as it can be. Experienced skills coaches, often previous athletes themselves using their training, their competition experience, their on the ground knowledge. All moving to the same best outcome.

You are a home buyer. You don’t want to necessarily buy a home every four years. Just one will do. Why is it so hard? You are coming from ground zero and playing to win against real estate agents who train, who dedicate time, who have huge incentives to win with years of on the ground experience. The playing field is not the same. As a home buyer, how can you be more like the professional athlete? What is missing?

As a professional real estate agent for over 20 years, I coach you, guide you,  giving you the benefit of my years of experience, of thousands of homes, of research, of real estate agents, of real estate training, the words, the processes, I have it all and I share it with you.

As the Olympian goes to the competition with their head on straight, all the skills, you go to an auction knowing the battle, knowing what you need to do to win. Sometimes it’s not the gold, sometimes it’s the silver but coaching gives you a supporting hand to do the best you can.

Don’t come in second for endless months, go for the gold, being in your own home is worth it.

OLYMPIC MEDALS 2026

The image is the work of Milano Cortina 2026, the medal design varies from Olympic to Olympic. The reason for this design I thought was inspiring.

The Olympic medals for Milano Cortina 2026

The medals feature a unique design that combines two halves that symbolise the culmination of the athlete’s journey and all those who have walked beside them along the way
